With Everton looking for a long-term solution to their left-back problem, The Toffees surely would have been keeping a close eye on Ben Chilwell when Leicester City travelled to Goodison Park on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old is seen as one of the most highly-rated left-backs in the country and is starting to make his mark in Leicester’s first team on a more consistent basis these days. Chilwell has even ousted Christian Fuchs in the starting XI.
And with Everton casting their net wide in search of Leighton Baines’ eventual successor, it is almost inconceivable that Chilwell would not have come up in conversation.
After all, the England under-21 ace is known well by Everton’s director of football Steve Walsh, who was Leicester’s chief scout when he made his professional debut.
But it is fair to say that Chilwell did not exactly ace his audition to be the new Baines in midweek. He was at fault for both Everton’s goals in that 2-1 win, losing the ball on the edge of his own box in the lead up to Theo Walcott’s opener while failing to pick up the former Arsenal winger as he slammed in a second.
Leicester City fans were united in their outrage at Chilwell’s performance, and the Everton fans who were clamouring for the Toffees to sign him back in the summer may now have changed their mind somewhat.
Vardy’s not getting a sniff. Gray hasn’t been in the game. Chilwell’s having a mare. Could be 4 or 5 nil down. Only thankful thing is we aren’t. #LCFC— WTFox (@WTFox1884) January 31, 2018

What on earth was Chilwell doing— Bert (@BertLcfc) January 31, 2018
How many times do I have to say it? Chilwell is not a left back. The lad can't defend. #lcfc— Mark Norman (@mnorman1985) January 31, 2018
