Reading have lodged a bid for defender Yoann Barbet from Championship rivals Brentford, HITC Sport understands.
Reading boss Jaap Stam is looking to bolster his side's defensive options during this month's transfer window and Barbet has emerged as his top target.
Stam is a fan of left-sided central defender Barbet, as he can also play at left-back having filled in at the role for Brentford on several occasions this season.
Left-back has been a problematic position for Reading this season, with Jordan Obita ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery, and Stam feels Barbet's versatility would make him a valuable addition to his squad.
Barbet joined Brentford in the summer of 2015 from French second tier club Chamois Niortais, and he has established himself as a key player at Griffin Park.
The Frenchman has made 24 appearances in all competitons so far this season, and chipped in with three goals for the Bees.
The 24-year-old is in the final 18 months of his contract at Brentford and Reading are hoping to lure him to the Madejski Stadium to help them climb clear of trouble at the wrong end of the Championship table.
Brentford are reluctant to lose Barbet as they look to make a push for a promotion spot and they are now weighing up Reading's offer.
