Stoke City have made an offer to Espanyol boss Quique Sanchez Flores about becoming their new manager following the sacking of Mark Hughes, reports the Telegraph.

The former Watford chief - who guided the Hornets to 13th in the Premier League and an FA Cup semi-final in 2015/16 - is the Potters' first choice to take charge and they are now waiting for his response.

A move for Gary Rowett was abandoned when the 43-year-old signed a new contract with Derby County, but the Republic of Ireland's Martin O'Neill has held talks with Stoke and is also being seriously considered.

Yet having already looked into the Championship for inspiration in the shape of Rowett, should the Staffordshire outfit revisit the division should Flores opt to stay in Spain?

Although they have suffered a blip in form of late, Sheffield United have generally impressed in the second tier of English football this season under Chris Wilder following their promotion as winners of League One.

The Blades currently sit seventh in the table and one point outside the playoffs and their style of football has seen Wilder receive many plaudits.

Although with no experience at the top level, having won League Two with Northampton Town in 2016, League One in 2017 and now doing so well in the Championship, would the 50-year-old be a gamble worth taking?
