Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given has told The Express that he thinks Sam Johnstone will want to stay with the club rather than return to Manchester United.
Villa first signed Johnstone from United back in January of this year, and renewed his loan deal in the summer after impressing in the second half of last term.
Johnstone has continued to impress this season, and his displays appear to have triggered Premier League interest, with The Mirror claiming interest from Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United.
Villa will hope to keep Johnstone though, and their first concern will come in January, when parent club Manchester United can recall him and take him back to Old Trafford.
Johnstone, 24, has come up through the ranks with the Red Devils but has yet to even make his debut for United, instead being farmed out on loan to clubs such as Doncaster Rovers and hometown club Preston North End.
If recalled, Johnstone would surely be sat behind Sergio Romero and David De Gea in the pecking order, and staying with Villa may be better for his development.
Now, former Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given has told The Express that he thinks Villa would love to keep hold of Johnstone, as he has had a 'great season' so far.
Given added that he doesn't think Johnstone will want to leave Villa to return to United and solely play Under-23 football, suggesting that the Red Devils should leave him at Villa Park.
“Well, I think that would be good if they could keep him,” said Given. “He’s had a great season. I don’t know what Manchester United will be thinking about that. But Sam will have a taste for playing at Aston Villa now as well and I wouldn’t imagine he’d want to go back and play Under-23s or whatever at Man United.”
“He’ll want to further his career and, I can’t speak for Sam of course, but I’m sure Villa would love to keep him,” he added.
