Rangers held Celtic to a 0-0 draw at Parkhead today.
Celtic were big favourites to get the win and move 14 points clear of Rangers, but Grame Murty's side produced a spirited display to leave the green side of Glasgow with a point.
The young Rangers man performed admirably in a game which the Ibrox side could have won, if not for missed chances from Alfredo Morelos.
By the same token, the Hoops also missed their fair share of gilt-edged opportunities, and former Gers midfielder Joey Barton believes it was a fair result.
Fair result in the Old Firm. Rangers the better side for me in the 2nd half. Good result for the new manager. Bates did great when he came on. ⚪️— Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) December 30, 2017
Rangers have shown definite improvement under Murty, who has won seven, drawn one and lost four of his 12 Premiership games in charge.
And this result will only reaffirm suggestions that the Gers' hierarchy were right to give him the job until the end of the season, while they continue to hunt a long-term replacement for Pedro Caixinha.
