Leeds fans have been reacting on Twitter to comments that Thomas Christiansen made during his press conference ahead of the Whites' clash with Norwich on Saturday that Felix Wiedwald is one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship - and it is certainly an interesting response.
Wiedwald arrived in the summer and has certainly divided opinion amongst Leeds fans. Under pressure from the get-go after replacing Rob Green as the Whites' number one - and being so highly thought of by the hierarchy that they were prepared to let Green move to Huddersfield before the summer window closed - the German has not exactly managed to win all of his doubters over.
An early run of six consecutive clean sheets did not see the former Werder Bremen man receive a huge amount of praise as many felt that the defence were to thank for that sensational run of results.
And when he was tested more often, the cracks started to appear with a number of mistakes seeing him dropped for Andy Lonergan - who similarly struggled to keep mistakes out of his game and was soon dropped to allow Wiedwald to return.
It seemed to going fine for the 27-year-old following his return - though there were still doubts as he, once again, had little to do - until the win over QPR last weekend when the home side's goal saw Wiedwald commit another terrible mistake when a seemingly harmless ball was played into the box and ended up in the net.
He would then make a tremendous save to deny Rangers an equaliser before Kemar Roofe made the points safe, and no-one really suspected that Christiansen was going to make another change between the sticks for the clash with the Canaries - but few expected the claim that the Leeds boss would make during his press conference.
As reported by Leeds Live, the Dane suggested to reporters that he felt that Wiedwald was actually one of the divisions' best goalkeepers - and that prompted plenty of discussion on social media.
While many Leeds fans are convinced that Christiansen is wrong, there are a significant number of fans who have either defended Wiedwald or even suggested that Christiansen is right and the stopper can prove that he is one of the best in the Championship.
Here is the best of the mixed reaction...
I’m not jumping on th bandwagon of hating Wiedwald, he does have some quality, but Jesus this statement is laughable— Ben Smith (@BenSmith_7) December 15, 2017
I know people don’t like Wiedwald but I do, we seem to play a lot better with him in the team.— Paul & Vicky (@MeathopWhites) December 15, 2017
I’m willing to give Wiedwald another 6-10 games to prove himself, but ye I get your point so far. Rachubka was completely inept, which is why he only had a few games.— Lieutenant Cool (@LieutenantCool) December 15, 2017
I understand why TC has to say that about Wiedwald but if he honestly believes that then we've got problems.— James (@JamesLUFC) December 15, 2017
24th best 1st choice keeper in league?— Wayne (@waynelufc1) December 15, 2017
Slightly worrying!— Steven Ward (@SWard1975) December 15, 2017
The same people moaning will be the fans who used to moan about kasper now a premiership title holder. We play better with him in the team and he's done some good saves this season. Only young so mistakes will happen.— Martyn Jones (@JonesMartyn) December 15, 2017
I agree, he's up there with the consistent top flight experience he has. He's a good keeper, just wish people weren't so quick to point out his flaws and overlook how he's saved us multiple times.— Nathaniel #SV2 #ME9 (@WaffleVandoorne) December 15, 2017
All keepers make mistakes. But his distribution is miles better than AL— Bri (@bri0142) December 15, 2017
I agree and have from day one, if and when he leaves it will not be down a level imo.— Andrew Bedford (@Briangayle92) December 15, 2017
He probably is if he can just stop dropping clangers— Sean G (@SeanyGee) December 15, 2017
He very much has the potential to be. Lots of mistakes in short space of time tho.— Jay (@JayBlufc) December 15, 2017
Needs to stop making ridiculous mistakes though— Ron (@ronaallleeds) December 15, 2017
