Arsenal could not break down a resilient West Ham United side on Wednesday evening, leaving the London Stadium with a point after a 0-0 draw.
The Gunners had plenty of chances to win the game, with 22 goal attempts, yet with only three of those on target it was clear that it was not going to be Arsenal's night from relatively early in the encounter.
West Ham did not trouble Petr Cech's goal all night, yet they can be happy with their efforts and Arsenal will be increasingly frustrated as their league campaign falters heading into the festive fixtures.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger made plenty of changes for this clash with youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles starting for the first time in the league this season.
The 20-year-old had a good game and the future looks bright for the youngster; however on this occasion his more experienced teammates were not able to put the finishing touches to any of the club's attacks and it could be hard for Wenger's men to finish in the top four without a few changes in January.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Arsenal fans thought of Maitland-Niles' performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
I am so excited for Maitland-Niles. Man has skill, good crossing more than decent strength.. Huge prospect! Will only get better!— RSingh (@Cazorla_Esque) December 14, 2017
It’s taken a few years but Arsenal finally have a player who can cross a half-decent ball into the box...his name is Ainsley Maitland Niles.— The Weekdy (@knlsoni) December 14, 2017
Ainsley Maitland-Niles: 8/10— Rupin Kale (@Vegansportlover) December 14, 2017
One of the best players for Arsenal yesterday. It was the youngster's PL debut, and he stepped up big time, in spite of playing in an unfamiliar position. His crosses are wonderful, he doesn't wilt under pressure and handles attack well.
Maitland niles by the way. What a talent.— WENGER OUT (@WidePlaymaker) December 14, 2017
Nice to see Maitland-Niles got a bit of praise on MOTD. Playing out of position but still our best player on the night.— Tom (@Tom180AFC) December 14, 2017
Don’t get where you think Kolasinac has been the best LB in the league. I think he has been average. Maitland Niles was very good tonight. Wilshire also better than Ramsey. Still in Wenger out camp— Ray Coffey (@RayBrisca) December 14, 2017
ONLY positive from tonight is that Ainsley Maitland-Niles looks a decent player— alex (@alexburns1088) December 14, 2017
Maitland-Niles showed how inept Hector Bellerin is going forward today. Put in a few very good crosses from the wrong side he normally plays on.— TNG© (@tn_gooner) December 13, 2017
On a more positive note, I thought Ainsley Maitland-Niles performed pretty well for his Premier League debut! Got up the field well and put in some decent crosses towards Giroud. Promising! pic.twitter.com/1eLVFDFlLD— Lacazette FC (@Lacazest) December 13, 2017
