Everton have been left short of options at left-back this season, with Cuco Martina currently playing there out of position.

Alan Stubbs has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 11th December, that he cannot believe Everton only have one recognised left-back at the club.

Leighton Baines is the Toffees’ first choice to play on the left hand side of defence, but Sam Allardyce’s options are very limited otherwise.

Allardyce has generally picked Cuco Martina to play at left-back, with Baines currently out.

Martina is generally a right-back, and has not looked entirely comfortable in the new year.

And Stubbs feels that Everton will need to be busy in the January transfer window to correct the faults in their squad.

“They need a striker and I would have thought it would be some sort of target-man, who can hold the ball up,” Stubbs said.

“For Everton to have only one left-back at the club is unbelievable. The recruitment has been very poor over the summer.”

Everton are expected to have money to spend in January, but it may be too little too late to push them into the race for a European place this season.

The Toffees expressed a desire to challenge the top six at the start of the campaign, but they have failed to live up to expectations.

Everton are currently in 10th place in the Premier League table, with their next match coming against Newcastle United in midweek.
