Shakhtar Donetsk beat Manchester City 2-1 on Wednesday night.
Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca and Manchester City's Pep Guardiola
Manchester City ended their Champions League group stage campaign with a defeat on Wednesday night, as they lost 2-1 at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Pep Guardiola picked something of a rotated side for the trip to Ukraine, and saw his side slip to a 2-0 deficit in the first half, with Brazilian duo Bernard and Ismaily both finding the back of the net.
City did pull one back late on from a Sergio Aguero penalty, but Guardiola has warmed up for the Manchester derby with a defeat, whilst the result sends Shakhtar through to the last 16.
It's a huge achievement for manager Paulo Fonseca, especially given that Feyenoord and Napoli were also in their group, with the Portuguese boss continuing to impress.
Fonseca, 44, won the Ukrainian Premier League title last season following a move from Braga, and his stock continues to rise after guiding Shakhtar into the knockout stages of the Champions League.
That is particularly interesting for Everton fans, given that O Jogo reported just last week that the Toffees were in advanced talks with Fonseca over a move to replace Ronald Koeman, only for Shakhtar to block the move and leave Everton to appoint Sam Allardyce instead.
After seeing Fonseca guide his Shakhtar side to a win over Manchester City, Everton fans took to Twitter to hail the former Porto boss, suggesting that Everton and Farhad Moshiri to go for Fonseca at the end of the season - despite only handing Allardyce an 18-month deal last week.
Many are impressed with Fonseca's brand of football, believing that a summer move could be ideal after Allardyce stabilises the club, but it remains to be seen whether Everton and Moshiri feel the same way.
City being torn apart here, we seriously have to go for Fonseca after Allardyce.— Matty (@_MattyEFC) December 6, 2017

We HAVE to go for Fonseca after Sam leaves but you just know it'll be Marco silva or Dyche— J. (@futboljosh_) December 6, 2017
I hope we’ve got one eye on Fonseca for next season cos he’s class. I’ve watched Shakhtar for a bit now, well before we were linked to Fonseca and the football he has them playing is really good. Their also quite a well drilled unit aswell...— Aidy Dews (@AidyDews) December 6, 2017
Football there from Shakhtar, that Fonseca is a gamble over Allardyce tho lads— Brendan (@BrendanEFC_) December 6, 2017
I really do think it's going to be Fonseca in the summer. Ticks all boxes so far and looks like he made it clear he wants to join us.— Scott Morris (@Scott_MorrisEfc) December 6, 2017
Just a case of hoping he feels the same way in the summer when Shakhtar will not have a say in his future.
