Wolves were heavily linked with a season-long loan move for 20-year-old Benfica winger Diogo Goncalves in the summer, as reported by the newspaper Record.

The Portuguese under-19 international has broken into the Benfica first-team this season following 68 appearances and 10 goals for the club's B team, making nine appearances across the Champions League and Liga NOS and even registering his first assist for the senior side in a 3-1 win over Vitoria de Guimaraes last month.

Whilst Benfica remain locked in an intense title race in Liga NOS, their Champions League campaign has been nothing short of a disaster, losing all six of their group stage games.

20-year-old Goncalves has started four of the Portuguese side's Champions League games under Rui Vitoria, but struggled against an organised FC Basel side on Tuesday night.

Subbed off to make way for Jonas after just 62 minutes, Goncalves failed to complete a single dribble or tackle during the entire game and failed to stamp any authority or impact on the game whatsoever.

Goncalves is certainly an outstanding talent, although maybe his Champions League performances suggest he isn't quite ready for the top level and, with Ivan Cavaleiro and Diogo Jota in scintillating form, not quite what Wolves need right now.
