After weeks of speculation, Rangers finally made their approach for Derek McInnes last night.
Rangers have been without a permanent manager since Pedro Caixinha was fired in October.
Graeme Murty has been in temporary charge and recently led Rangers to two wins over McInnes' Aberdeen.
Rangers could now hope McInnes attempts to force the issue behind the scenes, or return with an improved financial package for their former player.
The situation is hugely frustrating for Rangers fans, who have been worried about the lack of an evident plan from the club's board.
It seems odd that Rangers have waited this long to reach out for McInnes, although it is possible that only now they have had some encouragement behind the scenes.
Rangers fans have reacted to the developments, with some accusing Aberdeen of 'holding him hostage', and others feeling their own club has been embarrassing in the whole saga so far...
Aberdeen are holding Derek McInnes hostage— Lewis Stockman (@LewisJoe_) December 5, 2017
Aberdeen will just be being snide refusing Rangers permission to speak to McInnes and in all honesty I would be too! We have went about this completely the wrong way!— James Mckenzie (@jamesmck93) December 5, 2017
If we're not careful, this approach for McInnes could create some lasting ill-will between us and Aberdeen.— Alex Anderson (@FatEck) December 5, 2017
How’s it taken this long to actually ask for permission to speak to mcinnes.— gaz (@Shugsears) December 5, 2017
So the mutton molesters have refused @RangersFC permission to speak to McInnes. Like we never saw that coming. Plan B time Rangers. Leave him where he is.— ŦHΣ ßΣΛR (@BigScotsBear) December 5, 2017
