The Everton hero has left his position overseeing the development of the club's academy players.
Joe Royle has left his position as part of the Everton coaching staff.
As reported by BBC Sport, Royle rejoined Everton in 2014 to help with the development of the club's young players, while he also helped to prepare the team alongside David Unsworth for the final game of the 2015/16 season against Norwich City following the dismissal of Roberto Martinez.
Royle commenced his playing career at Everton and scored 119 goals for the club in 276 appearances.
Later Royle returned to Everton as a manager as he guided the Toffees to glory in the 1995 FA Cup, with his side prevailing past Manchester United in the final.
Still well respected amongst Everton supporters, Royle has been widely praised for the work that he has done with the club's academy players in recent years.
There have been suggestions in some quarters that Royle's departure from Everton is a consequence of new manager Sam Allardyce attempting to put his own stamp on the club.
However, others have indicated that, given that he is 68 years old, Royle may simply be electing to retire.
Here's how Everton fans reacted to Royle's departure:
Shame seeing Joe Royle leave. Wish him all best in the future, was nice seeing him back at Everton the last few years. Top man pic.twitter.com/sYejv4uU2g— Nick (@NickEFC_) December 6, 2017
The word legend is used far too easy these days but Joe Royle is definitely in that bracket.A credit to himself and the club.— Hodgie (@neilhdg) December 6, 2017
Thanks for everything Joe.
Thanks for everything Joe and all the best to you whatever you do next personally I think you should retire and maybe do some punditry in Dubai or the like— Graham Davies (@GrahamDavies4) December 6, 2017
Is this Sam or Moshiri flexing their muscles ? An indication of changes to come perhaps ?— Jim S (@Bluebailey55) December 6, 2017
Joe is a good man and he has my very best wishes.
Wish him well. COYB!— D Lee (@StoneMaiden7) December 6, 2017
Anybody know why? Just hope it was his decision and not Allardyce's— Steve Harris (@SteveHa55381234) December 6, 2017
I've no idea if Joe Royle has or hasn't left Everton (seen a few rumours), but it is worth bearing in mind that he turns 69 in April. If he has left, it might just be that he's decided to retire. As simple as that. Doubt there will be any unfortunate reason behind it.— UpperGwladysBlue (@UpperGwladysBlu) December 5, 2017
Wish Joe Royle all the very best. He did a great job of latterly looking after all the young lads out on loan and supporting David Unsworth— NSNO.co.uk (@nsno) December 5, 2017
Don't think it's an unhappy departure. He's friends with Allardyce and think it's more of a retirement thing. Top bloke is joe and he won't say a bad word even if it was an unhappy split!— NSNO.co.uk (@nsno) December 5, 2017
