Everton manager Sam Allardyce has suggested to The Times that David Unsworth was the club’s first-choice managerial candidate.

Allardyce has recently been appointed as the manager of Everton and will succeed Ronald Koeman in the hotseat at Goodison Park.

Unsworth was in charge of the first team on an interim basis, with the Toffees also trying for Watford manager Marco Silva, according to The Times.

Former Newcastle United and West Ham United boss Allardyce has suggested that Unsworth was Everton’s first-choice managerial candidate.

“The club, I think, wanted to give David Unsworth the job first and foremost, before me and Silva,” Allardyce told The Times. “That is fine.

“I don’t worry. You can’t put all your eggs in one basket. You can’t say, ‘I’m going to go for one manager and that’s it’. You have to see what is out there.”

Unsworth did not have a great time as the Everton interim manager, as results and performances under him were disappointing.

True, Everton came from behind to win 3-2 against Watford and hammered West Ham United 4-0, but the Merseyside outfit also suffered heavy defeats to Lyon, Atalanta and Southampton.

The season is still quite early and there is a chance that Everton could finish in the Premier League top 10, and appointing Unsworth as the manager would have been a risk.
