And you can see why. Lawrence was one of the most eye-catching players in the Championship last season during his loan spell at Ipswich Town, assisting nine goals and scoring another nine himself, the majority stunning strikes that would not look out of place amongst the Goal of the Season nominees.
The Welsh international, however, has not really hit the ground running at Derby. Despite producing a smattering of impressive displays, Lawrence is yet to justify his hefty price-tag with an underwhelming tally of one goal and three assists from 16 Championship games.
And with Derby losing for only the second time in 12 games at home to Lawrence’s former employers Ipswich Town on Tuesday night, the 23-year-old has started to come under fire from Rams fans.
Though bright and lively on occasions, Lawrence, who was also booked for diving inside the Ipswich box before the interval, delivered a hugely frustrating and largely wasteful display as he desperately attempted to make his mark against Mick McCarthy’s team.
Only Matej Vydra in Derby’s history cost the club more than Lawrence. But if he continues to perform like this, that price-tag will start to be questioned.
I didn’t think Weimann was that bad but thought Lawrence was dreadful.— Mark Wheatley (@Mark0_dcfc) November 28, 2017
Struggled with getting the ball under control at times tonight I thought. Agree on Lawrence, do find him frustrating at times. Needs to be stronger on the ball. Thought Russell did more in 20 mins than both wingers personally.— EmJay ✌️ (@EmmaKinsey7) November 28, 2017
