Kent instead moved to SC Freiburg on a season-long loan, but has only made one start and five substitute appearances for the Bundesliga side.
According to the Sun, Liverpool are worried about the 21-year-old's lack of progress in Germany, and could loan him out to an English club instead. Should that prove to be the case, Wednesday should be banging on Liverpool's door.
Kent impressed up the road at Barnsley last season, and would breath fresh life into a team devoid of any real pace or flair in the absence of Fernando Forestieri, who is unlikely to return much before the end of the January transfer window - if at all.
Like the Italian though, Kent is not one to shirk his defensive responsibilities, and his ability to help out teammates at both ends of the pitch should endear him to Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal in a way that former Hillsborough loanees Aiden McGeady and Callum McManaman failed to in recent campaigns.
With half the Championship credited with interest in Kent this year however, Wednesday are unlikely to be alone if the England Under-20 international does become available.
And they should do everything in their power to ensure they don't miss out again.
