Report: Barcelona to target Tottenham Hotspur's Christian Eriksen in January

Spanish giants Barcelona appear to have diverted their attention from Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

Tottenham Hotspur may have a fight on their hands to keep hold of Christian Eriksen with Don Balon reporting that Barcelona want to sign the playmaker in January.

The Daily Mail have linked both Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil with the Spanish giants as they seek greater creativity in central midfield.

But Don Balon understands that Barcelona chiefs favour a move for Eriksen because they believe the Denmark international to be a better player, and a better investment.

One of the attractions to the Spurs midfielder over some of his Premier League counterparts is that Barcelona feel that the 25-year-old has room to improve, Don Balon adds.

Eriksen’s numbers in the Premier League since joining Spurs in 2013 are better than both Ozil and Coutinho.

He has outscored them both with 34 goals to Coutinho’s 33 and Ozil’s 24, and although his 44 assists are three fewer than the German, it is almost twice as many as the Liverpool man’s 25.

Coutinho of Liverpool competes with Mesut Ozil of Arsenal during the Barclays Premier League match between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield on February 8, 2014 in Liverpool, England.

Tottenham remain adamant that they are not going to sell their best players as they aim to build a team to win the title, and Eriksen is the unsung hero of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The Dane also signed a new four-year contract with Tottenham in 2016, according to Sky Sports, so Barcelona may have as much luck chasing Eriksen as they did Coutinho last summer.
