West Ham United have endured a miserable campaign thus far.
The east London outfit have often been criticised for paying their players far too much money, so Gold's move to highlight this fact seems strange to say the least.
The Hammers currently sit in 18th position in the Premier League table, after their woeful return of just 10 points from their opening 13 League games, and Gold, alongside fellow co-owner David Sullivan have incurred the wrath of the London Stadium faithful.
Popular West Ham fansite Claret & Hugh today released figures showing West Ham as the continent's 14th highest payers of players' wages, ahead of the likes of Everton, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan.
Both Gold and Sullivan have been accused of failing to bring in enough quality to the club, whilst ploughing wasteful money into the club's wage structure.
And the club's co-owner took to Twitter today, sharing the top 20 list of Europe's highest payers - a move that backfired quite drastically.
Here are a selection some of the best responses from Hammers fans:
That's nothing to be proud of. We're in the bottom three. Obviously you're paying them too much. You really shouldn't be allowed to Tweet.— MB (@mookieb84) 26 November 2017
This is embarrassing. We overpay for average players with bad attitudes. Bad management and terrible ownership.— Antony Harris (@antony_harris) 26 November 2017
Given your current league position this doesn't show your business acumen in a very good light. Overpaying for failure. Bravo— Paul O Keefe (@pokeefe1) 26 November 2017
This is not something to be proud of. All it shows is that you pay ridiculous wages to overrated, bang average players.— ⚒ Gary Mills ⚒ (@GaryMillsy) 26 November 2017
I just don’t understand what you think you will achieve by tweets like this. Are you suggesting that, because we are one of the highest payers , it absolves you of any responsibility for us underperforming? This just shows we overpay average players!— ahammersfan (@ahammersfan) 26 November 2017
And??? You really have no idea DG, no idea!— Jamie Jackson (@HashtagJacko) 26 November 2017
This only highlights how inept you are with your transfer policy........— Alfie Newland (@alfie_newland) 26 November 2017
How is this something to be bragging about? Genuinely embarrassed for you.— Official (@officialbobbyj) 26 November 2017
Yet another example of how badly you have been running the club then don’t you think? Club has invested in the wrong players. And yet, somehow, the board still haven’t bought the extra striker or CM we know we all need. Nett spend not enough and you sold our home— Chris Newton (@five0123) 26 November 2017
