With some of European football’s established elite looking over FC Basel wonderkid Breel Embolo in the summer of 2016, few expected the striker to pair off with Bundesliga side Schalke.
But after the German outfit confirmed the signing of one of Europe’s most exciting attacking prospects for a club-record fee of £20 million, they couldn't resist a little dig at a number of Embolo’s former suitors – including Premier League giants Arsenal, per The Sun.
And if the North London giants were left a little red faced, local rivals Tottenham Hotspur could now apply a hearty dose of salt to their wounds a year-and-a-half on.
According to The Mirror, Spurs are in the market for a young striker to provide back-up to Harry Kane, with the veteran Spaniard Fernando Llorente yet to make an impact following his summer move from Swansea City.
And it is understood that Embolo, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham in the past, is still among the targets of talentspotting coach Mauricio Pochettino. The 20-year-old is certainly the archetypal Tottenham target, a young, versatile and exciting player with huge room for improvement.
Though Embolo’s status as one of the world’s most promising attackers has taken a hit in the last 12 months, after he suffered not only a broken ankle but serious ligament damage too just weeks into his debut season with Schalke.
After making his long-awaited recovery in 2017/18, Embolo has started just one of his six Bundesliga outings. Though a player who netted 17 goals for Basel as a 17-year-old in 2014/15 clearly still has huge potential.
And Tottenham would be making a real statement by signing a player rivals Arsenal were desperate to land not so long ago.
