Everton stooped to a new low this season on Thursday night.
The Toffees, led by caretaker boss David Unsworth, were thrashed 5-1 by Atalanta at Goodison Park in a Europa League game which compounded Everton's worries.
The Premier League side sacked Ronald Koeman a month ago and it appears more serious than ever that owner Farhad Moshiri and his colleagues appoint somebody as soon as possible.
Everton have now lost four from six in all competitions since Koeman's axing, shipping 14 goals in the process, but Wayne Rooney puzzled the club's fanbase - and perhaps even neutral supporters - after Thursday's demolition by claiming that Unsworth's temporary appointment has been a "positive".
As a result, fans of the Goodison Park club reacted to the claim on Twitter with surprise.

Rooney just claimed that the players are enjoying training under Unsworth and atmosphere is good. How could it possibly be good when we're absolutely dreadful?— Scott Morris (@Scott_MorrisEfc) November 23, 2017
Amazing Rooney comes out in support for Unsworth after a thrashing. Says it all really. On 100K a week, it's all about the atmosphere!— Gavin Simpson (@MrGSimpson) November 23, 2017
What’s he on about ... they’ve hardly had a major upturn in results ..— Paul Johnson Tog (@pauljohnsontog) November 23, 2017
What would Rooney know about management? He can’t even manage himself!— Eric Grindrod (@eric_grindrod) November 24, 2017

Yeah because getting smashed 5-1 is a positive change— mark watson (@Markwatson75) November 24, 2017
Everton have a hat-trick of winnable games on the horizon - away to Southampton on Sunday and then home to West Ham and Huddersfield - and you get the feeling that victory in at least two of them is possible if the club's owners can appoint somebody in the very near future.
