Newcastle United are looking for a partner for Jonjo Shelvey for this weekend’s game and Chancel Mbemba looks to be the best option.

Newcastle United have lost their last three matches and head into their next fixture against Watford with some serious selection problems in the centre of midfield.

Jonjo Shelvey has earned his place back in the side, but his preferred partners Mikel Merino and Isaac Hayden are both unavailable on Saturday; the former’s injury woes exacerbated by the suspension of the latter.

And so Rafa Benitez must look deeper into his squad to find an answer, with Mohamed Diame and Henri Saivet the two most likely options.

However, the big problem there is the style of those two players, both of whom prefer an attacking role, much like Shelvey.

Shelvey’s best work has come alongside Merino and Hayden because the young duo handle their defensive responsibilities well, working hard in their own half and keeping shape.

For that reason, Chancel Mbemba must be in with a shout of a recall.

Mbemba was Newcastle’s best defender just two years ago, but he is now fourth in the pecking order at the back and has instead found minutes at left-back this season.

The 23-year-old actually captains DR Congo from a midfield position, though, and Benitez referenced this option recently when confirming Jack Colback would not be considered for selection – as reported by the Daily Star.

Mbemba is tidy on the ball but, as a defender, he would also offer balance alongside Shelvey’s more ambitious play.

Without Merino and captain Jamaal Lascelles, Newcastle need a big performance from Shelvey and it is crucial that Benitez’s midfield call gives him the best possible opportunity to star.
