Newcastle United returned to domestic action following yet another international break with a trip to Old Trafford, and the Magpies were unable to get one over on Manchester United, soundly beaten by the hosts despite taking an early lead.

Rafa Benitez's side opened the scoring courtesy of Dwight Gayle, but United hit back with goals from Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, and Newcastle had no answer to the hosts' impressive attacking play.

One area of the field Newcastle would have been desperate to win was central midfield, but the visitors fell well short in that regard, with Isaac Hayden failing to make his mark and being thoroughly bossed by the likes of Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

Hayden has attracted plenty of criticism for some underwhelming performances this season, and Saturday's showing is not going to have one him any more fans.
