Garry Monk did not enjoy a happy return to Leeds United.
Garry Monk returned to Elland Road with Middlesbrough yesterday and suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Leeds United.
Monk quit Leeds in the summer and later took over as Middlesbrough manager.
Boro came into the game three points ahead of Leeds in the Championship, a deficit pulled level by the Whites with their win.
Garry Monk spoke after the game, suggesting that the 2-1 loss to Leeds was harsh.
Garry Monk on defeat to Leeds: "Overall I thought we were quite comfortable defensively, apart from a few counter attacks late on which you'd expect when you're chasing the game. But I felt we definitely deserved to come away with at least a point." #boro pic.twitter.com/GZHK8s8Di8— EverythingMFC (@EverythingMFC) November 19, 2017
Monk's assessment that Middlesbrough deserved a share of the point was blasted by his own fans, who accused him of being deluded.
Here is a look at how fans reacted to his comments.
He knows he was managing Middlesbrough right?— put it in h (@Cmon_T_Boro) November 19, 2017
And this is why there is a disconnection between him and fans, he spouts absolute garbage rather than saying it as it is (or he’s deranged). Defensively we were shocking and we didn’t deserve anything from the game.— We're Middlesbrough! (@We_are_Boro) November 19, 2017
Oh Gary please, really???— Andrew Willis (@andywillis78) November 19, 2017
Blinkers on. Ridiculous. We were awful.— Dave Muir (@DaveMLY) November 19, 2017
Give me a bit if what he's on— Danny Evans (@DannyevansDanny) November 19, 2017
Really wtf no pace and absolutely clueless #boro— Michael D'souza (@mike_desouza) November 19, 2017
Defeat was bad enough for Middlesbrough but the manner of the performance made it even worse.
Leeds had been 2-0 up before Britt Assombalonga pulled one back late on.
Middlesbrough had a disappointing start to the season before pulling together a good run of results over the past month to reach the play-off spots.
Now that progress has been checked and it appears Monk has a long way to go to truly convince Middlesbrough fans that he can deliver them promotion.
