England fans have slated Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier’s performance against Brazil.
England held on to claim a credible 0-0 draw with Brazil at Wembley in a friendly last night, and Dier was given a key role in the contest.
The Spurs man was stationed just in front of England’s three-man defence, as he looked to provide a shield in front of the Three Lions’ backline.
Dier’s importance to England was highlighted by the fact that he has been handed the armband for his nation’s last two matches.
But England supporters have questioned what Dier brings to the team.
People out here lying to themselves that Livermore isn't a better player than Dier just because he plays for a 'big club'. Literally all Dier does is give it away like literally. #ENGBRA— Thomas Dallison (@dallo9) November 14, 2017
Centre midfield still the main issue for England. Dier continues to offer very little, the captain playing like an imposter tonight #ENGBRA— Ben Grounds (@Ben_Islington) November 14, 2017
Thoughts on #ENGBRA - Dier was awful, Neymar remains a tit, ref made some weird decisions, but a good clean sheet n enjoyable game.— Ben Eccleston (@BenCovTel) November 14, 2017
Eric Dier got to release the ball earlier, got caught in possession so many times #ENGBRA— Paul Mottershead (@PaulMotto) November 14, 2017
Eric Dier has somehow managed to be the worst of a midfield three involving Jake Livermore and Jesse Lingard tonight. Some achievement, that. #ENGBRA— Tom Marshall-Bailey (@TomMarshall_B) November 14, 2017
Eric Dier must be the most overrated player ever!! #ENGBRA— Neil Taylor (@neilpt7e) November 14, 2017
Dier has actually played in Tottenham’s defence more recently, but was given a defensive midfield role against Brazil tonight.
The Spurs man looks a certainty to go to the World Cup with England next year, fitness permitting, and he is likely to start in Gareth Southgate’s side’s first match in Russia.
