Sheffield United defender Jack O'Connell is in advanced talks over a new deal at Bramall Lane, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

O'Connell has established himself as a key man in Chris Wilder's side since his arrival from Brentford in the summer of 2016 and has earned himself a reputation as one of the best young defenders outside the Premier League.

The 23-year-old made 50 appearances in all competitions for United last season, chipping in with six goals as the Blades won promotion to the Championship by winning the League One title.

O'Connell has continued to excel for United in the Championship this season, helping the club to second spot in the Championship with a number of commanding performances at the heart of the Blades' defence.

The former England Under-19 international's displays have not gone unnoticed elsewhere with several Premier League clubs keeping tabs on O'Connell's progress at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United have moved to fend off any interest in O'Connell and reward him for his growing importance in Wilder's side by opening talks over a new long-term deal to keep him in South Yorkshire.

The news will come as a massive boost to United as they look to maintain their push for promotion to the Premier League this season and will be welcomed by the Blades supporters with O'Connell a real cult hero among the fans.

The Blades have paid an undisclosed fee for O'Connell, who made 18 appearances for the Bees after signing from Blackburn Rovers in February 2015.
