The Kilmarnock winger says he will never play for Rangers, but Smith said the same about Manchester United.

This week saw Kilmarnock winger Dominic Thomas make his feelings clear about a potential future move to Rangers. The former Celtic youngster, who joined Kilmarnock from Motherwell in the summer, has been in fine form this campaign. Such form has him tipped for future stardom and perhaps Ibrox could be a future destination for the player. But, as he made clear on Twitter, he has no intention of ever joining Rangers - due to his Celtic allegiance.

But the youngster should be careful what he says - just take a lead from former Leeds United star Alan Smith. The former England international made a bold statement when he was a star at Leeds United. Whilst appearing on a Soccer AM segment as a Leeds player he was asked a simple question - ‘Is there one team you’d never play for?’

His answer was clear, he would never play for Leeds’ bitter rivals Manchester United.

Then, with Leeds struggling financially, the Red Devils came knocking in 2004 and Smith made the move. It left him disliked by many a Leeds fan in the immediate aftermath, although in the long-term it appeared his move was in the best interests of his home club.

Smith, whose career was subsequently marred by injury trouble, only learned at the time to never say never, and Thomas, who may have the intention of never playing for Rangers, would have been wise to follow that advice.
