Mitrovic has struggled for playing time at Newcastle so far this season, having managed to make only two substitute appearances in the Premier League.
In a total of 30 minutes of league football so far this campaign, the Serbia international striker has scored one goal.
During the 2016-17 campaign, the 23-year-old scored four goals and provided six assists in 11 Championship starts.
Mitrovic has been linked with moves away from Newcastle in the January transfer window, with Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion and Southampton interested in the striker, as reported by talkSPORT.
Newcastle manager Benitez has revealed how the former Partizan and Anderlecht youngster can claim a place in the Magpies’ starting lineup.
When asked what Mitrovic has to do to get a game, Benitez told The Shields Gazette: “It’s the same for everyone.
“The players who aren’t playing at the moment have to carry on training and training hard, and then if they get an opportunity, make the most of it.”
Newcastle, who won automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of last season, are 11th in the Premier League table at the moment with 14 points from 11 matches.
