Hart is the most experienced player in the current England squad with 74 caps but he had to watch from the bench at Wembley on Friday night as the talented Jordan Pickford made an impressive international debut in the goalless draw against Germany.
It is anticipated that Hart will return to the starting line-up for tomorrow's friendly at home to Brazil and Southgate has urged the 30-year-old to seize his opportunity, especially with Jack Butland, who is currently injured, also hoping to claim the number one jersey at next summer's tournament in Russia.
As reported by The Sun, Southgate said: “Jordan had an excellent game against Germany.
“We’ve got a period now of six months for all our goalkeepers to show what they can do. Now is an opportunity for Joe to have experience against top opposition as well.
“We are all aware that there is really good competition for places in that area of the pitch.”
It has been a challenging time for Hart of late, with the goalkeeper still owned by Manchester City despite having no long-term future at the club.
Hart endured a miserable loan spell with Italian side Torino last season, while this campaign he has, to much concern, conceded 23 goals in 11 Premier League games for a struggling West Ham team.
