Newcastle United could be fighting a losing battle moving for Everton's Ross Barkley

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley could be a great addition for Newcastle United, but it seems the transfer is highly unlikely to go through.

According to The Daily Star, Newcastle United are aiming to sign Everton’s Ross Barkley in the January transfer window.

Newcastle are keen to bring in Barkley, as they look to announce a new era at St. James’ Park.

Amanda Staveley is set to take over at Newcastle, and the businesswoman is likely to provide Rafael Benitez with an increased amount of funds to spend.

Newcastle will want to show ambition in the transfer market, to increase excitement on Tyneside, but going after Barkley may be a step too far.

Barkley has refused to sign a new contract at Everton, which means that he could be available at a cut-price in January, or a free transfer in the summer.

And Barkley’s availability has led to a host of leading teams chasing him.

The Daily Telegraph have reported that both Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are hunting Barkley, with the pair both lining up offers.

And if Newcastle are competing with the Champions League chasing duo, then they may be better off focusing their attentions elsewhere, as they look to be fighting a losing battle for the England international’s signature.
