Giovanni Van Bronckhorst was popular as a player at Ibrox - and would be welcomed back with open arms as a manager.

As one Rangers supporter perceptively points out, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst pretty much ticks all the boxes to be the new manager at Ibrox.

Like reported frontrunner Derek McInnes, he knows the club having spent three seasons on the blue half of Glasgow between 1998 and 2001. But, unlike McInnes, Van Bronckhorst has proven himself to be a real winner in the dugout.

After taking charge of Dutch giants Feyenoord in May 2015, the legendary Dutch left-back has led the Rotterdam side to the KNVB Cup, the Johan Cryuff shield and their first Eredivisie title since the turn of the century.

Feyenoord overcame the odds to beat Ajax and PSV to the league crown last season, putting together a squad far greater than the sum of its parts. Flowing football wasn’t necessarily key but team-work and consistency very much was.

And with Rangers desperate to claw back the gap between themselves and Old Firm rivals Celtic, Van Bronckhorst has emerged as the fans’ managerial favourite.

The odds have tumbled to 8/1 on the 42-year-old taking charge at Ibrox. And while Feyenoord’s form has slipped badly in the first few months of 2017/18, one of Europe’s most promising young managers would still be welcomed back with open arms at Rangers.
