The absence of Per Mertesacker saw Arsenal start Francis Coquelin at centre-back for their league clash with Manchester City on Sunday, and the decision did not go the Gunners' way.

A 3-1 win for City ensured they moved 12 points clear of Arsenal at this early stage of the campaign, and Arsene Wenger's side are already looking adrift when it comes to a potential title tilt, leaving many of the club's fans frustrated.

With Mertesacker and Rob Holding unavailable it was a necessary if unwelcome move to start midfielder Coquelin at the back, but the Frenchman was far from the worse performer on the day, and some of his more regular teammates should take a long hard look at themselves after the clash.

The 26-year-old has barely been used in the league this season, having to make do with some game time in Europe and the EFL Cup, but his first 90-minute showing allowed him the chance to prove his doubters wrong and stake a claim for the matches ahead.

With Mertesacker expected back shortly his Arsenal teammate may quickly slip back onto the periphery, but he at least tried his best against a City side that has steamrollered practically every team they have faced so far this season.
