Faouzi Ghoulam’s chances of moving to the Premier League have taken a major blow. Liverpool were prominently linked.

Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam has suffered a suspected torn ACL, according to Football Italia.

Ghoulam sustained the injury in the Champions League defeat to Manchester City, and the injury has plunged his own future into further doubt.

The Algerian defender had been linked over the past few weeks with a move away from the club with his contract set to expire this summer, he was set to become one of the bargains of 2018.

The left-back had made 11 appearances for Napoli this season before the injury.

ESPN reported in September that Ghoulam had emerged as a top target for Liverpool as a potential replacement for Alberto Moreno.

Ghoulam could have been a smart addition for the Reds, with Moreno inconsistent and Andy Robertson seen as more of a back-up than a long term option.

Now Ghoulam is left to regret not signing a new deal with Napoli, and while he could yet commit to the club during his injury process, he does not have quite the bargaining chip he previously did.
