Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric believes Slaven Bilic has the quality to turn things around at West Ham United.

Bilic is said to have been given two games so save his job, after Friday’s 3-0 home defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion left West Ham out of the Premier League’s relegation places on goal difference only.

Modric, who was speaking to Talksport at Monday’s Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony on Monday, played under Bilic while the Hammers manager was in charge of Croatia’s national team and says he is still in touch with the 49-year-old.

When asked about his old boss’s situation, Modric said: “I have a great relationship with Slaven. We speak a lot and I don’t like to see him in this situation but I’m sure he has quality and he will find a way to survive this.

“I wish him all the best. For me he is a great coach and a great coach for West Ham and hopefully in the future he will have better results with them.”

With Leicester City and Everton both wielding the axe this past week, West Ham could find themselves playing catch up if they do decide to relieve Bilic of his duties.

Bookmakers Sky Bet have already opened a market on the former Hammers defender’s replacement, which is currently being led by Manuel Pellegrini, the former Manchester City manager.

Pellegrini, who according to Sky Sports is interested in both the Leicester and Everton posts, has two years left on a reported £12-million-a-year contract with Hebei China Fortune.
