Celtic and Rangers fans clash on Twitter over FIFA fan award

Celtic are the winners of the FIFA Best Fan award for 2017 - and haven't waited around to rub Rangers' noses in it.

It doesn’t take much to spark a disagreement between Rangers and Celtic supporters.

It was no surprise, then, that The Hoops being award the prestigious FIFA Best Fan award for 2017 has proven the catalyst for the keyboard warriors on either side of the Glasgow divide to ride into war.

Celtic beat off competition from Borussia Dortmund and FC Copenhagen to win the prize for a stirring tribute to the Lisbon Lions on the 50th anniversary of their historic European Cup win over Inter Milan in 1967.

Even the most ardent Rangers enthusiast would struggle to find some reason to criticise the commemoration on the final day of the 2016/17 Scottish Premiership season, in which Celtic supporters held up a giant tifo and raised coloured cards to create a giant illusion of Ol’ Big Ears itself in the Parkhead stands.

Yet, Celtic fans did not waste an opportunity to rub yet another victory in the face of their bitter Glasgow rivals. After all, the debate surrounding whether the current incarnation of Rangers is a new club entirely or just a continuation of the side that was demoted to the fourth tier in 2012 remains a subject of serious debate – a question which FIFA itself has never been able to clearly answer.

And FIFA handing Celtic yet another prize for a bursting trophy cabinet has once again breathed fresh life into this tired old argument.
