There was a dash of Henrik Larsson in Louis Moult’s matchwinning second as Motherwell beat Rangers in the semi-finals of the Betfred Cup on Sunday afternoon.
The 25-year-old striker, who had already scored once to put Motherwell in front, raced onto a long ball over the top and produced an inch-perfect lob from long-range over Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick to ensure there won’t be an Old Firm derby at Hampden Park in November.
It was the sort of inspired, impudent finish that Celtic legend Larsson made his trademark during a legendary spell in green and white. And it has got Celtic supporters questioning whether the Champions should be making a move for Moult in January.
The former Stoke City youngster will be a free agent at the end of this season so is able to sign a pre-contract agreement in January. The Scottish Sun claimed last month that Rangers were hoping to lure Moult to Ibrox, despite failing to meet Motherwell’s asking price in the summer.
And Moult’s stunning double at the weekend has Rangers supporters wondering why on earth their club just didn’t put their hands in their pockets. Though it’s fair to say Moult is a popular man on the other side of Glasgow at the moment.
A prolific goalscorer and the man who knocked Rangers out of the cup – no wonder Celtic fans want to see Moult at Parkhead come January.
