Tottenham were linked with a summer move for Jean Seri.
Tottenham ended the summer transfer window without signing a new central midfielder, though it wasn't for the want of trying, if reports are to be believed.
One of those midfielders was Nice star Jean Seri, as RMC Sport reported that Tottenham had held talks over luring the midfielder to North London – but he ended up staying put with the French side.
Seri, 26, joined Nice from Pacos de Ferreira in 2015, and he impressed last season with seven goals and nine assists in Ligue 1, unsurprisingly attracting interest in the process.
Tottenham may return for a midfielder in January, given that Mousa Dembele has suffered major injury problems this season, and Seri fits the bill as a box-to-box midfielder with great quality on the ball.
The problem for Spurs may be the fee required to tempt Nice into a deal, with Goal reporting over the summer that Barcelona were willing to pay €40million (£36million) for Seri, and Daniel Levy may have reservations over paying such a huge fee for a midfielder approaching 27.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was claimed to be a big fan of Seri in RMC's report, and with Spurs potentially lining up another midfielder even after Harry Winks' rise this season, Seri could be the perfect competition for Dembele, in terms of a player who can carry the ball through midfield whilst also possessing a goalscoring threat.
Add in that Seri already knows Tottenham teammate Serge Aurier from international duty with Ivory Coast, and this could be a smart move for Spurs if they do rekindle their interest in January – as they should, given Dembele's injuries.
