George Soros' charitable foundation becomes world's third largest

After the financier donated $18 billion to the Open Society Foundation, it's become the third largest global foundation.

Donald Trump Points

Donald Trump has claimed that Soros' donations give him too much political power.

Hungarian-born financier George Soros, a massive contributor to Hillary Clinton's 2016 Presidential bid, has donated $18 billion to his charitable organisation - the Open Society Foundation, making it the third largest charitable foundation in the world.

The donation takes Soros' lifetime donations to $32 billion, and puts the foundation just behind the Welcome Trust and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. According to the Guardian: 'Open Society works globally to “build vibrant and tolerant democracies” and has given away nearly $14bn since it was founded in 1979.'

Soros is controversial in US politics, and a target of much abuse from Trump supporters for his strong support of both immigration and the Clinton's. Originally from Budapest, Soros is currently in the midst of a row with the Hungarian government over press and academic freedom. Known as one of history's most successful financiers, Soros ranks as one of the top 30 richest people in the world, boasting a net worth of upwards of $25 billion.
