Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers visit St Johnstone on Friday night.
Problem is, the 23-year-old is probably going to have a major increase in defensive work shortly by virtue of Declan John's presence in the team.
The Cardiff City loanee likes to get forward quite a bit and the onus is on Windass to drop into a left-back role to ensure there is sufficient cover when John goes upfield.
Worryingly for Rangers fans, the former Accrington man admitted to the Gers' website that he "doesn't like" filling in for the adventurous Welshman but that is exactly what is required of him - especially now.
Caixinha publicly criticised Windass after the 2-1 win at Motherwell on the opening weekend of the season for his defensive frailties and it does not bode well that the Portuguese manager is still shouting at him over it.
John scored twice in the win over Hamilton last time out. He's a big asset in the final third but he shouldn't restrict his natural inclination to get forward in the fear that Windass isn't behind him ready for a counter-attack.
If this is evident in Friday's trip to St Johnstone then Caixinha has little choice but to drop him the following week.
