Since Benitez wanted Newcastle reunion, Peter Gulacsi has missed just one game; deal impossible?

Newcastle were interested in signing Peter Gulacsi over the summer.

Despite making changes in his goalkeeping ranks, Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez didn't bring in a new shot-stopper over the summer – though goalkeepers were linked with moves to St. James' Park.

Benitez chopped and changed his goalkeepers last season, as Matz Sels started the season in goal before being dropped in favour of Karl Darlow, whilst Rob Elliot finished the season between the sticks.

Summer came, and Benitez decided to let Matz Sels return to his native Belgium with Anderlecht, before he also allowed Tim Krul to join Brighton and Hove Albion, initially on loan before making the move permanent.

With just Darlow and Elliot – who had little Premier League experience to call upon – at his disposal, many expected Benitez to bring in another goalkeeper, but no deal was completed for a new shot-stopper before the August transfer deadline.

One link was to RB Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, as ESPN reported in July that Benitez wanted to reunite with the Hungarian having signed him and worked with him at Liverpool.

Gulacsi may now have made the grade with Liverpool, but he is impressing in Germany, having cemented himself as Leipzig's No. 1 – and whilst Newcastle hoped to capitalise on Leipzig signing Yvon Mvoga by launching a move for Gulacsi, the latter has nailed down his place again.

Gulacsi has missed just one game in the Bundesliga this season and played both of Leipzig's Champions League games, meaning that whilst the signing of Swiss stopper Mvogo was lauded, Gulacsi has been almost ever-present since Newcastle's interest.

That means that any lingering hope of a new bid from Newcastle in January could fall on deaf ears, with Gulacsi still impressing in the Leipzig goal – and whilst Elliot is impressing this term, Benitez may yet look elsewhere for another goalkeeper.
