Dusan Tadic of Southampton controls the ball while under pressure from Kevin Wimmer of Stoke City
Stoke City defender Kevin Wimmer has told The Express in Koln that he has Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min to thank for helping him settle into life in London.
Wimmer, 24, emerged as a top young defender during his time with Bundesliga side Koln, having joined from LASK Linz in his native Austria back in 2012.
The defender's performances earned him his big move in the summer of 2015, joining Tottenham Hotspur as Mauricio Pochettino landed him as cover for Jan Vertonghen as the left-sided centre back.
Wimmer showed flashes of his quality during his time with Spurs, but could never truly nail down a first-team spot under Pochettino, and made just 15 Premier League appearances in his two years in North London.
Wimmer was pushed even further down the pecking order this past summer after Spurs moved for Davinson Sanchez, and the Austrian international decided it was time to move on, joining Stoke City in the final stages of the summer transfer window.
The centre back has already started three Premier League games for Stoke, and will look to kick on after a frustrating time with Spurs – and he has now discussed his difficulties adjusting to life in England.
Wimmer has told The Express in Koln that it took him months to really feel comfortable with Spurs, and he thanked Tottenham star Son Heung-min – who also arrived in the summer of 2015 – for helping him settle, claiming the South Korean is still his best friend after they hit it off with Spurs.
“It took me a few months to find myself,” said Wimmer. “But with Son Heung-Min I immediately found a friend in the team, he has even become my best friend. Through him I quickly got used to everything,” he added.
This is far from the first mention of the friendship between Son and Wimmer, as winger Son even admitted to the London Evening Standard that he was saddened by Wimmer's departure – and the two could face each other when Tottenham and Stoke meet at Wembley Stadium in December.
