It hasn’t taken Declan John long to make an impact at Rangers. 21 minutes into his first start for the Glasgow giants after arriving on loan from Cardiff City, the left-back opened his account with a well-taken finish against Hamilton.
Four minutes later, he doubled his tally and put The Gers in front for the first time after Danny Redmond had given the hosts an early lead. Further strikes from Daniel Candeias and Graham Dorrans secured an impressive 4-1 win, but there was little doubt about the Man of the Match.
John is already looking like a key player at Rangers and, with captain Lee Wallace out for two months with a groin injury, he has the chance to make the left-back position his own in the coming weeks.
After he was excluded by Neil Warnock at Cardiff, making just seven league appearances between October and May, it is no surprise that John is revelling in feeling wanted again.
Thanks for all the messages from last night doesn't go unnoticed ⚽️ #Rangers— Declan John (@declanjohn7) September 30, 2017
The two-time Welsh international has plenty of incentives to be a success at Rangers. He is out of contact at Cardiff at the end of the season and faces a fight to force his way into the Wales squad ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
Consider this Rangers loan spell an audition for both club and country – one John should pass with flying colours if he continues this electric form.
