After Friday's 2-2 draw at Partick Thistle, left-back Declan John, who replaced the injured Lee Wallace at Firhill, admitted that he had stuff to work on defensively.

With Wallace now ruled out of Rangers' visit of Celtic on Saturday, fans of the Ibrox club might well be worried if John starts following those comments, based on the fact he'll be up against Patrick Roberts or James Forrest.

Forrest scored twice for Celtic on the weekend, while Roberts was one of the Hoops' best players last season. Either way, John, who has one game under his belt in Scotland, could struggle.

Rangers captain Lee Wallace lifts the Scottish Championship Trophy at Ibrox Stadium on April 23, 2016 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

John is the best of two less-than-ideal candidates to fill in for the Gers skipper, along with Myles Beerman, and Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha should turn to Lee Hodson.

Of course, playing a right-back on the left isn't ideal, but he has filled in there before and, frankly, he is a lot more experienced in a big-game setting than John or Beerman.

The 25-year-old has struggled for regular chances at right-back since being signed by Mark Warburton 14 months ago but that isn't to say he isn't a competent player, because he is and Rangers fans might agree that he's the safer option than either of the other two.

Beerman started two games against Celtic last season, giving him a taste of the Old Firm and everything it entails, but the fact is that he's only 18 and hasn't kicked a ball in the senior set-up so far this season.
