According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur target Andre Gomes wants to leave Barcelona in January in order to save his place in the Portugal squad.
Gomes, 24, impressed with Benfica and Valencia before earning a big-money move to Barcelona last summer, where he was expected to challenge with the likes of Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic in midfield.
However, the Portugal international struggled to find any sort of form or even confidence during his time at the Camp Nou, starting just 17 league games in a difficult campaign under Luis Enrique.
Barcelona then signed another midfielder this summer in Paulinho, and Gomes looked set for a move away from the club, only for Ernesto Valverde's men to pull the plug on a deadline day loan move to Tottenham.
Now, The Sun report that Tottenham are lining up a new January move for Gomes, in the hope of snapping him up for a knockdown £20million fee as he appears to have no future with Barca.
It's added that Gomes is hoping to leave in January, as he needs to play regularly in order to save his place in the Portugal squad ahead of the World Cup in Russia next summer.
Portugal have a host of midfield options, including Danilo Pereira, William Carvalho, Joao Mario, Renato Sanches, Adrien Silva, Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Bruno Fernandes, meaning that Gomes could seriously lose his place in the squad – even if he does have 26 caps to his name so far.
Tottenham will now be hoping that Gomes' desire to leave Barca facilitates a move in January, with Mauricio Pochettino potentially eyeing up a move to finally sign the midfielder, just weeks after seeing his last-gasp move fall through.
