Serge Aurier of Tottenham Hotspur and Christian Pulisic of Borussia Dortmund battle for possession
Ray Wilkins has told The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (broadcast on 14th September 2017; 8:14 am) that he thought that while Serge Aurier was fantastic going forward in Tottenham's win over Borussia Dortmund, he looked less convincing defensively.
Spurs kicked off their Champions League group-stage campaign with an impressive and enthralling 3-1 win over the Bundesliga side at Wembley.
The game presented Aurier with the chance to make his Spurs debut following his £23 million move from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer transfer window, with the fee being reported by the London Evening Standard.
And while Wilkins was full of praise for his attacking intent and his battle with one of Dortmund's wingers, he suggested that there is a question mark left over the Ivory Coast international's defensive strength.
"But he had the most fantastic battle with [Christian] Pulisic from Dortmund. Up and back and they were fighting each other either way, and I thought it was a great little personal battle.
"But he looked as if he might be a little bit suspect defensively, [and] didn't get back on the back post half as quick as he should have done."
While Wilkins may not have been entirely convinced about Aurier's display against Dortmund, it must not be forgotten that he was making his debut for Tottenham so expecting the performance to be perfect would have been a major ask. But the early signs certainly suggest that Mauricio Pochettino has an excellent player at his disposal.
