Birmingham City goalkeeper David Stockdale has explained his decision to wave to a section of the Leeds United supporters at the end of Tuesday's 2-0 loss at Elland Road.

Goals from Samu Saiz and Stuart Dallas consigned Birmingham to a fifth defeat in seven Championship games this season, and saw Harry Redknapp's side drop into the bottom three.

And Leeds-born Stockdale - a lifelong supporter of the Whites - was approached by a Blues fan on Twitter afterwards, who accused him of 'enjoying the result'.

But the 31-year-old stood his ground, replying: "That was that I had family in the stand and mum and dad in a box behind them fans. While I did it after thanking our fans for the support.

"The fact that after being a professional for 13 years you think I enjoyed being beat hurts more. Ask any clubs I've played for. I give 100%"

Stockdale is one of 14 players signed by Birmingham during the summer transfer window, despite reports of interest from Leeds, Middlesbrough and others.

The free transfer recruit was promoted from the Championship with Brighton & Hove Albion last season and was subsequently named in the PFA divisional team of the year.
