Former Liverpool and Newcastle United winger John Barnes has told HITC Sport that Everton will not be able to challenge for the top four of the Premier League this season.

Everton were quite busy in the summer transfer window and signed a number of new players.

Among the players that the Toffees recruited are forward Wayne Rooney from Manchester United, attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from Sunderland, defender Michael Keane from Burnley and striker Sandro Ramirez from Malaga.

Ronald Koeman’s side finished seventh in the Premier League table last season, and the Goodison Park faithful will expect the Toffees to push for a top-six finish, perhaps even for a top-four spot.

Former Liverpool winger Barnes does not expect Everton to challenge for a place in the top four of the Premier League this season.

The former Celtic manager, though, does expect the Merseyside outfit to challenge for the fifth and the sixth positions in the table.

In an exclusive interview with HITC Sport, Barnes, speaking on behalf of Bonus Code Bets, said when asked about Everton’s chances of a top-four or a top-six finish: “Well, I think they can challenge for the top six, probably not the top four because if you look at the game against Chelsea, you can see that they are, in terms of quality, still a bit short.

“I think they can challenge for fifth or sixth. I don’t think they can challenge for the top four positions.”
