Newcastle United had a frustrating summer in the transfer market but there is still time to add new faces who are free agents.
The options are very limited, but one player who should be an appealing option is Swiss international Reto Ziegler.
Ziegler once starred in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, and went on to play for Juventus.
The defender is still just 31 and performed strongly for FC Sion in the Swiss Super League last season.
He is remembered from his Premier League days as a left-back, a problem position for Newcastle, but in recent years has transitioned into more of a centre-back.
Last season for Sion he scored eight goals from defence and spent much of the season as captain.
His versatility, experience and leadership would make him a potentially smart addition for Newcastle on a free transfer when alternate options are very limited.
The Mail reported in 2010 that he was on Rafa Benitez's radar at Liverpool, although the manager left the Reds a month later and the interest was not followed up.
Newcastle's squad would look better with the 35-capped Swiss international on board than without him.
