The Leeds United legend has one criticism for the 21-year-old.
Leeds have had an excellent start to the Championship season, winning three and drawing two of their first five games as Thomas Christiansen's side sit third in the table.
Likewise, it has been a decent start for the 21-year-old, who scored twice in United's opening-weekend win at Bolton Wanderers to double his tally from last season.
Phillips is quite a combative figure in the Whites midfield - and perhaps even moreso now since Liam Bridcutt left - and Gray told LUTV that the youngster must curb that aspect.
He said: "He's a good winner of the ball but sometimes he goes overboard and that's one part of his game I think he's got to curb, giving stupid freekicks away unecessarily.
"There's times in games when you give freekicks away and everybody accepts it, but times when he has no chance of winning the ball and he still tries to do it."
It is worth pointing out that this is only Phillips' second full season in Leeds' senior team, having initially broken into the first team under Steve Evans, and he certainly has plenty of time in which to improve that area of his game.
Leeds host Burton Albion at Elland Road next Saturday.
