Oxlade-Chamberlain moved to Liverpool from Premier League rivals Arsenal on transfer deadline day.
It was reported that the 24-year-old, who can operate as a winger or as a central midfielder, turned down Chelsea on Tuesday.
Liverpool legend Nicol has suggested that Jurgen Klopp’s side should not have signed Oxlade-Chamberlain from Premier League rivals Arsenal on transfer deadline day.
The former Scotland international full-back has questioned why the Reds would sign a player who has not excelled in his best position.
Nicol told ESPN FC about Oxlade-Chamberlain: “Why would you buy a player to play in the position that you have never seen him play in? That’s basically what’s happening.
“I think last season for a couple of halves he played in the middle of the park and then got either taken off or shifted back wide again.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain is a versatile player, but the England international wants to be deployed in a central midfield position.
Liverpool do have enough players in that position, and one wonders whether the 24-year-old would be able to play regularly for the Reds this season.
