With the summer transfer window set to close on Thursday evening, Sunderland are desperate to land a goal scorer with proven Championship experience.
Bolstering the attacking department is Simon Grayson’s top priority at the moment, but the club’s tight budget is proving to be a hindrance in landing top targets.
Sunderland have been targeting Aston Villa’s Ross McCormack for weeks, but it seems they have switched attention to the Middlesbrough striker as an alternative.
The 27-year-old is an experienced Championship striker, who has played under Grayson at Huddersfield, and has netted 94 Championship goals throughout his career.
Rhodes, the Owls’ £8 million record signing, has struggled to hit the mark for the South Yorkshire club, with Carlos Carvahal opting for Gary Hooper and Steven Fletcher ahead of him.
Sunderland fans took to Twitter to express their opinion on the transfer speculation. While many feel he would be a good signing, they are skeptical whether the Black Cats have the funds required to carry out the deal.

#safc interested in Jordan Rhodes worth £10 million, don't even have £10 never mind £10 million— Adam Lowden (@AdamLowdenx) August 28, 2017
I'd happily take Jordan Rhodes, but will that mean missing out on McCormack? Hopefully we can bring both of them in #safc— Liam White (@LiamWhite2) August 28, 2017
Would be a good signing— Lysander (@thelysander555) August 28, 2017
