According to a somewhat surprising report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle are ready to sell Dwight Gayle during the final days of the window to bolster Rafa Benitez's transfer kitty.

Gayle has endured a tough start to the new season, having failed to score in both of his Premier League appearances so far and failing to make the matchday squad for the win over West Ham at the weekend.

The game saw fellow forwards Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic both get on the scoresheet in the 3-0 win, and it now appears that Benitez is ready to cash-in on Gayle to boost his funds during the final stages of the summer, according to the Mail.

While Gayle's two rivals in the squad both made their mark against the Hammers, it is perhaps still a surprise that Newcastle are ready to sell the 26-year-old.

The former Crystal Palace man - who arrived last summer for £10 million (via Sky Sports) - scored 23 times in the Championship last season to inspire the Magpies to the title and automatic-promotion, and some fans may have felt that he had done more than enough to earn another chance at the highest level.

But perhaps Benitez believes that with Gayle proving so ruthless in the Championship last term, he could still be a player that second tier sides will scrap to sign, and thus, he could command the kind of fee that gives Newcastle's budget a significant boost ahead of what they will be hoping is a successful push to get more players in.
